2010 WCE China Softball Trip
12/27/2010 Monday - Our 38 Member WCE Softball Delegation led by WCE Board Member Julie Coburn, Coach Mindy Cleeland (former UW Player &
Team Captain), and Coach Heather Mairs (Mountain View HS, Vancouver) departed from Seattle, will transfer planes in Beijing, and arrive
in Guangzhou as scheduled. Our three WCE Softball Teams will play in the 2010 Guangzhou International Youth Softball Tournament with
the Host Team (Guangdong Youth Softball Team – Provincial Team) and two Local Teams (Guangzhou Youth Softball Team – City Team and
the Peizheng High School Softball Team). Our Students will also visit Guangzhou Xiguan Foreign Language School and tour the major sites
of Guangzhou City with Students from Guangzhou Xiguan Foreign Language School. In Beijing our WCE Delegation will stand on the Great Wall
of China, tour the Forbidden City, visit the Summer Palace, and much more. Please encourage family and friends to visit this page for
pictures and emails from the daily activities of the trip.
12/28/2010 Tuesday Guangzhou (7:30 am Seattle Time 11:30 pm Guangzhou Time) We have just spoken with Jessica Chen (our exceptional Guangzhou
Tour Manager). Our 38 Member Softball Delegation has arrived safely in Guangzhou and are on their way to the White Swan Hotel where they will
have a very quick meeting and will then get a well deserved night of rest. Tomorrow the delegation will visit the kindergarten, tour Guangzhou
Xiguan Foreign Language School, and explore Guangzhou City’s most famous sites with Students from Guangzhou Xiguan Foreign Language School.
Their adventure has begun. Michael Xaio (our excellent manager in Guangzhou) will send us pictures (first ones most likely tomorrow) and
updates from Guangzhou daily!
12/29/2010 Wednesday Guangzhou (7:30 am Seattle Time 11:30 pm Guangzhou Time) We have received our first update with PICTURES from Michael Xiao
(our excellent Tour Manager) in Guangzhou. It was a very busy and outstanding day (68° on a beautiful sunny day)! In the morning our Students
visited the kindergarten and played games with the kids (always a favorite activity on every trip). Then our Delegation visited Guangzhou Xiguan
Foreign Language School (a local Guangzhou high school the number one English Speaking high school in the province) to visit the School and tour
Guangzhou City’s Most Famous Sites with the Guangzhou Xiguan Foreign Language School Students. After lunch our Students visited the Five Ram Statue (the
symbol of Guangzhou City), explored the Guangzhou Museum, and shopped on Nine Pedestrian Road (a local street shopping area that is a showcase of
traditional Cantonese architecture). Our Delegation enjoyed dinner at Lianxianglou Restaurant and after dinner had to say good-bye to their new
friends from Guangzhou Xiguan Foreign Language School. Tomorrow is the first day of the 2010 Guangzhou International Youth Softball Tournament!

12/30/2010 Thursday Guangzhou (7:50 am Seattle Time 11:50 pm Guangzhou Time) We have spoken with Jessica Chan (our exceptional Guangzhou Tour Operator)
and received another updated with more PICTURES from Wendy (our excellent Tour Guide) in Guangzhou. Everyone is happy, healthy, and enjoying their
visit to China! Today was the first day of the 2010 Guangzhou International Youth Softball Tournament and two of our WCE Teams played Games. WCE 1 lost to
the Guangdong Softball Team (the Provincial Softball Team that finished 2nd in the All China Tournament this year) and WCE 3 defeated Peizheng High
School Softball Team (the best high school softball team in Guangzhou). The morning started with a tour of Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Memorial Hall (a famous
performance hall with 4,700 seats in the spacious auditorium that is beamless and produces no echo) and Chen Clan Temple (The temple is a complex compound
consisting of nine halls, six courtyards and nineteen buildings connected by corridors, all separated by walls from the outside world) on
another beautiful, sunny 70° day! Tomorrow all 3 WCE Teams will play Tournament Games. (More pictures are posted below!!)
12/31/2010 Friday Guangzhou (7:50 am Seattle Time 11:50 pm Guangzhou Time) On another beautiful, sunny 70° day our Friends in Guangzhou would like to be the
first to wish everyone in Washington State a Happy New Year from Guangzhou (since it is already 2011 in China)! We have received another update from Wendy (our
excellent Guangzhou Guide). It was a full Tournament Schedule for our 3 WCE Softball Teams. In the morning WCE 2 was defeated by Guangdong Softball Team 1 (the
Provincial Team and #2 Youth Softball Team in all of China) and Correction WCE 3 shutout the Guangzhou Softball Team #1 (the Guangzhou City All Star Softball Team).
After Lunch WCE 1 defeated WCE 2 10 to 9. Tomorrow morning the games continue with the Championship Game in the afternoon and the Tournament Farewell Banquet
in the evening! We have also received a text from Julie Coburn (WCE Trip Leader), “The trip is going very well! The girls are extremely good eaters so we have
added fried noodles, broccoli, and a double batch of sweet and sour pork to the menu. Happy Eaters and Happy Players!” PICTURES are POSTED!
1/1/2011 Saturday Guangzhou (7:30 am Seattle Time 11:30 pm Guangzhou Time) HAPPY NEW YEAR! Our WCE Softball Delegation’s last beautiful, sunny 70° day in Guangzhou
was wonderful. We have received our latest update with MORE PICTURES from Michael Xiao (our outstanding China Tour Manager)! Michael stated that “USA 1 got the 2nd
prize and the USA 3 got 3rd. Guangdong Team was the champion! Everyone loves the game, love the Asian Game stadium, love local players!! And then, we had a fabulous
banquet and Taylor got her first ever birthday outside USA!” We also spoke with Julie Coburn (WCE Trip Leader) who informed us that the New Year’s Day Parade was
held on the street just outside of the Guangzhou Asian Games Softball Stadium so our WCE Delegation was able to watch part of the parade and join in the celebration
with the local people! Tomorrow our WCE Softball Delegation will take an 8:30 am flight to Beijing to stand on the Great Wall of China and tour all other historical
sites in Beijing during their 4 day visit. (They will be met by weather similar to Seattle with a high tomorrow in Beijing of 33°.) HAPPY NEW YEAR AGAIN!
1/2/2011 Sunday Beijing (7:50 am Seattle Time 11:50 pm Beijing Time) Our WCE Softball Delegation has arrived safely in Beijing and are staying at The Lake View Hotel
where every room has a computer! We have received another update with more Pictures from Jessica Chen (our exceptional China Tour Organizer) and have spoken with Julie
Coburn (WCE Trip Leader). Jessica informed us that “We took the morning flight to Beijing and arrived smoothly. Since it's much colder than Guangzhou, we went to a Market
to buy Jacket, boot, sweater etc first. After the bargaining practice, we went to visit the magnificent and colorful Temple of Heaven - built in 1420 A.D. during the Ming
Dynasty for the Emperors of Ming & Qing Dynasty to offer sacrifice to Heaven and pray for good harvest. In the evening we enjoyed the famous delicious Peking Duck! Tomorrow
we will visit the Summer Palace, Tian An Men Square, and the Forbidden City.”
1/3/2011 Monday Beijing (7:50 am Seattle Time 11:50 pm Beijing Time) We have received an email and a few Pictures from Jessica Chen (out excellent China Tour Manager).
In the morning our WCE Delegation visited Tiananmen Square (said to hold up to a million people, Tiananmen Gate or Gate of Heavenly Peace which is a national symbol, and
Mao's Mausoleum) and toured the Forbidden City (the largest, well preserved, ancient buildings in China as the Forbidden City was off limits to everyone for 500 years).
After lunch our Students visited the Summer Palace (mainly dominated by Longevity Hill - 60 meters high - and the Kunming Lake) and in the evening enjoyed an amazing Acrobatic
Performance. We have received MORE PICTURES from Beijing and Jessica Chen has also sent an update! "Today is another great day! In the morning, we visit the Summer Palace - the
largest royal park which listed by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1998. Then we went to the Silk Factory which showed us how the silk comes from. After another
delicious Chinese lunch, we visited Tian An Men Square - the largest city square in the world and the geographical center of Beijing City, and the Forbidden City - the world's
largest palace complex which is also listed by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1987. The Acrobatics Show in the evening is amazing! Everybody enjoyed the day!
Tomorrow will be the Great Wall!"
1/4/2011 Tuesday Beijing (6:50 am Seattle Time 10:50 pm Beijing Time) We have received our final update and Pictures from Jessica Chen (out excellent China Tour Manager). Jessica
informed us that “Today is great sunny day. The group stand on the top of the world famous Great Wall! Everyone was so exciting with the breathtaking view! After the delicious
Chinese lunch we visit the peaceful Spirit Way of Ming Tomb with the stone statues of guardian animals and officials. The fantastic Pizza buffet dinner came after the great shopping
experience in Xiu Street Market! It’s really a great day for everybody! Tomorrow morning we’ll visit the Olympic Stadium-Bird’s Nest & the National Swimming Pool-the Water Cube!”
In the evening our WCE Delegation held their “Return to Seattle Meeting” to prepare for their flight back to Seattle tomorrow. For Parents Meeting the Delegation tomorrow: First
check (call Hainan Airlines at 1-888-688-8813 or go online at www.hainanair.us and check the Flight Status of Hainan Airlines Flight #495) to make sure the flight is on time. We will
meet the delegation at International Baggage #1 or as they walk up the stairs from the South Concourse. Remember they will need 50 – 60 minutes to clear US Immigrations and US Customs
after their flight arrives. We will see you at the airport tomorrow.
