2018 WCE China Softball Trip

12/26/2018 Wednesday (11:30 AM Seattle) Our 38 member WCE China Softball Delegation led by Coach KT Allyn (WCE Board Member/former Marysville-Pilchuck HS Coach) Coach Jon Hughes (Athletic Director Cleveland HS/Seattle Spice Coach), and Coach Sarah Hirsch (Lake Stevens HS Coach) is all checked in at SeaTac Airport and ready for their trip to China. The flight, however, is delayed in it's departure time today. Our WCE team is getting to know one another and patiently waiting at SeaTac for their departure time to arrive!

12/26/2018 Wednesday (5:00 PM Seattle) Trip Leader KT Allyn emailed at 4:45 PM to say that they had boarded the plane. Boarding went well and the flight was now departing!

While in China, the Softball Delegation will visit both Guangzhou and Beijing, China. The Guangdong Softball Federation will host Softball Competition for our WCE team in Guangzhou, China. Pictures and emails will be posted on this page during the trip! Please encourage family and friends to view this web site for daily updates and pictures!

Below is the first WCE Softball Delegation photo taken today at SeaTac Airport.

12/28/2018 Friday (1:00 AM next day, 9:00 AM Seattle time) We have received our daily update from Jessica. "The group visited Guangzhou No. 3 Middle School this morning. It is the oldest Middle School with a history of 155 years. Everyone really enjoyed their time at the school, which included sports activities (basketball, volleyball, soccer, etc.) in the field, and a Chinese Calligraphy class with the students there. Everyone was deeply impressed with a video of their Sports Meets. In the afternoon our WCE Softball Delegation went to the Guangzhou Polytechnic Sports School. After their visit there the delegation headed back to Shenzhen for their flight to Beijing." Jessica has emailed again to say the delegation arrived safely in Beijing. Tomorrow the delegation will visit Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, and the Temple of Heaven. They will have a Peking Duck dinner and attend an Acrobatic Performance Show. Below are a few photos from their wonderful school visit!

Peter (our exceptional Guangzhou guide) traveled with our delegation to Beijing. He has also sent as a review of the first day's activities. "We had a very good day today. In the morning we went to visit Guangzhou No.3 Middle School. We had a look at the campus and learned about the history of the school. Then we played volleyball with the Chinese students. The friendship games went well and the friendships will go on. Last but not least, we had a Chinese calligraphy lesson together with our Chinese friends. We learned from the teacher how to use traditional Chinese writing tools to write down 福,which means good luck in Chinese. With the help of the Chinese students, we all did a good job. Time flies quickly and we had to say goodbye to our friends before we realize it. For lunch we tried buffet hot pot. Each of us got a pot with soup and cooked our own food. The ingredients are a buffet and there are lots of food to choose from to eat. It's great fun to eat in this way. We all liked it. In the afternoon, we went to visit the Guangzhou Polytechnic Sports School. We visited the campus and watched training of the Chinese students and athletes. They really work hard and they impressed us a lot. In the evening, we took a flight to Beijing and now we are safe and sound in Beijing. Tomorrow, we will visit the Forbidden City. Can't wait for it." Peter also sent two photos; one from lunch, and the other from the Sports School. We have added them both to the photos previously posted.

12/29/2018 Saturday (11:59 PM same day, 7:59 AM Seattle time) Peter has sent us an update of the group's activities and a few photos. "We had a very full, rich and wonderful day today. In the morning, we went to the largest square in the world — Tian An Men Square. The buildings there are all grand and we finally see what the "heart of China" looks like. All the architecture there is worth seeing and enjoying and we know for sure what "people mountain people sea" means. We also visited the World Cultural Heritage Site — the Forbidden City. This is really a royal trip. It was educational and enjoyable to see the place where emperors once lived. The buildings inside are all really impressive. In the afternoon, we went to visit the Temple of Heaven. It was another Chinese culture time. The inside of the buildings are real Chinese style and the scenery is so beautiful. For dinner, we had the famous Peking duck! We wrapped the roast duck together with pancake, shallot and cucumber. It was so delicious and we ate a lot. The other dishes served with this were also very good. In the evening, we went to watch an Acrobatics Show. It was so amazing. All the movements and activities they performed were challenging and exciting for people to see. We all loved that! Tomorrow, we will conquer the Great Wall! Really getting excited about that."

12/30/2018 Sunday (1:30 AM next day, 9:30 AM Seattle time) Peter has emailed another update from Beijing. "We have had a full and unforgettable day today! In the morning, we went to the Great Wall! Chairman Mao said "He who never climbs the Great Wall can't be called a true hero", and we are heroes today! The Great Wall is very steep and hard to climb but we all tried our best to get to where we could get. We've conquered the Great Wall! It was a really interesting and healthy trip to visit the Great Wall. In the afternoon, we visited the Walk of the Spirits of the Ming Tombs. The architecture there is great and grand. We had a good time there, and we learned more history and stories about the past dynasties. Then came another highlight. We went to the Xiushui Market (Silk Street Market) for shopping. We looked for what we were interested in and bargained with salesmen. We found some cool stuff there and we really liked the experience. For supper, we went to pizza! It is the same as, and a little different, from home. We and our stomach all had a good time. Tomorrow, we will visit the Summer Palace and then fly back to Guangzhou for more tours and our Softball Games."

12/31/2018 Monday (2:30 AM next day, 10:30 AM Seattle time) Peter has emailed an update from the last day the group spent in Beijing, before heading back to Guangzhou. "We have had a great day today! In the morning, we visited the Summer Palace. It is so large and the architecture there is so awesome that we don't want to leave. The buildings inside are real Chinese style and the scenery is very beautiful. Then we visited the Bird's Nest & the Water Cube, which are part of the Olympic Green from the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The buildings there are great and grand. We all liked them. After lunch, we had to say goodbye to Beijing and head to the airport for our flight to Guangzhou. Tomorrow, we will tour Guangzhou with local students and have a wiffle ball game. We are looking forward to it!"

1/1/2019 Tuesday (7:50 AM next day, 3:50 PM Seattle time) Peter had a problem with his email last evening. This morning, his time, he was able to send us an update from the day's activities. "Today was a full, happy and exciting day! We traveled together with the local students. In the morning, we visited the Five Ram Statue and learned more about Guangzhou. Then we went to a five-story building which is home to the Guangzhou Museum. This was really a good chance to learn more about the history, the environment, and the culture here in Guangzhou. Then we went shopping together with the local students at Up and Down Nine Pedestrian Street. We saw lots of interesting things there. We even tried to bargain there. It was lots of fun. Time passes really quickly and after lunch we had to say goodbye to our local friends. In the afternoon, we went to play a whiffle ball game with local Chinese softball players. It was great fun and we all had a good time. We even began to coach the local athletes and it benefited us a lot too. For dinner, we had something special - Dim sum and it was delicious. It was served in small but nice pieces and we tried lots of different kinds of Dim sum. It's one of the things you must try in China. Then we had an evening visit to Lichi Bay Park. Tomorrow, we will visit Guangzhou No.2 kindergarten and have a softball game in the afternoon. Really looking forward to that!"

1/2/2019 Wednesday (11:59 PM same day, 7:59 AM Seattle time) Peter (our outstanding guide) has emailed an update from the day's activities. "Today was a full, happy, and exciting day! In the morning we went to visit Guangzhou No.2 Kindergarten. The kids are so cute and we really had a good time having a class and playing together with them! Then we went to visit Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Memorial Hall. The Memorial Hall is also very great and we liked this kind of architecture. We learned more about Chinese history too. In the afternoon we played softball games with the Guangdong Teams. Our teams had a good time with the Guangdong Teams. They had really good pitching, and batting, and really impressed us. We had a good time together. Tomorrow we will play more softball games with the Guangdong Teams and the Nanfang Team. We will then get dressed up for our Farewell Diner. It will be a Boat Cruise on the Pearl River."

1/3/2019 Thursday (11:59 PM same day, 7:59 AM Seattle time) Peter sent us photos and an update from the day's activities. "Today was a full, happy, and exciting day! We played softball with the Chinese players all day. In the morning, we played the Guangdong Team and the Nanfang Team. They are both good and we had a good time together. For lunch, we had a dumpling feast. We tried different kinds of dumplings and we all liked them. In the afternoon, we switched and play with the other teams. Time passed quickly. We had to say goodbye before we realized it. Then came another trip highlight. We had a boat cruise. It was our farewell dinner on a cruise boat. The buffet on the boat was great and the scenery along the Pearl River was even better. We took pictures and enjoyed the beautiful view. We all had a good time. Tomorrow it will be time to head home. We hope everyone will have another chance to go back to China some day!"
